Jumpstart Your Bedtime Journaling Habit With These 10 Prompts

During our recent Decompression Session, we discussed the power of journaling before bed, to help you get a better night’s rest.

Too often, we carry the day with us to bed and then wonder why we toss and turn. The goal of nighttime journaling is to:

  • Unravel those complicated thoughts that bounce around our brain during the busiest parts of the day

  • Begin to heal from those consistent, uncomfortable thoughts that stay with us, often the residue of a challenging or traumatic event

  • Or to simply get those mundane thoughts (“What’s for dinner tomorrow? There’s still a leak in the downstairs faucet. I need to get the kids new shoes…”) out of our head and onto paper so we can stop carrying them around.

One participant in the Decompression Session said she likes the idea of journaling before bed but she often gets stuck without a prompt. What do you write? What’s important enough to say?

We developed a full deck of cards full of bedtime journaling prompts to get you started. Order yourself a Decompress Deck, a one-of-a-kind mix of 52 affirmations, bedtime journaling prompts and guided breathwork exercises for you to develop your own stress-relieving bedtime routine.

While you wait for your order to arrive, here’s a few prompts to get you started:

  • What has been the heaviest part of my day?

  • What has been the lightest part of my day?

  • What do I need to put down before I can rest well?

  • What's one thing I can put on my schedule tomorrow to add some brightness to my day?

  • Who can hold the biggest dilemma I'm currently facing so I can rest?

  • What am I looking forward to this week that will give me a big sigh of relief?

  • What is the biggest lesson I am resisting this week?

  • What does an ideal day look like for me?

  • Who or what can I turn to for comfort and support?

  • What is the biggest lesson this week has taught me?
